[Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation]
Fostering human resources who bridge Southeast Asia and Japan:
Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation announces
16 winners of the 2008 Sagawa Scholarship(11/5/2008)
The Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation announced the winners of the fiscal 2008 (23rd) Sagawa Scholarship. A 2008 Sagawa Scholarship Recipient Certificate Award Ceremony and Networking Event was held on November 4, 2008.
Seventy-two privately funded students from Southeast Asia, who are enrolled at private and public Japanese universities and have been recommended by their host university presidents, applied for the fiscal 2008 scholarship. The Foundation's selection committee faced difficult choices since applications invariably reflected candidates' strong commitment to study at Japanese universities in order for both their home countries and Japan to achieve mutual growth, in areas such as politics, economics and culture, and to become bridges for facilitating exchange between the two countries. Following a rigorous selection process, 16 students (7 undergraduates and 9 postgraduates) were chosen for the scholarship.
During the 2008 Sagawa Scholarship Recipient Certificate Award Ceremony, held on November 4, 2008 at Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City), Foundation President Eiichi Kuriwada (Chairman and President, SG Holdings Co., Ltd.) presented the scholarship recipient certificate to each of the 16 winners of the 23rd Sagawa Scholarship. Each student will receive 100,000 yen per month for two years.
On behalf of all 16 recipients who attended the ceremony, the scholarship student from Thailand gave an address: "I learned about Japan as a child through games and anime, and decided to study in Japan to deepen research on photovoltaic cells that I had done at university." The student, who had "learned how tough it is to live on an 800-yen-per-hour part-time job in Japan," expressed his gratitude for having been selected for the scholarship, which will allow him to devote his precious time to research. He concluded that he wishes to carry on, "turning even adverse circumstances into a source for growth." During the networking event that followed the award ceremony, this year's recipients, as well as recipients of the 22nd Sagawa Scholarship, members of the Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation, and personnel from SG Holdings Group had a chance to meet each other and develop friendships and trust.
Prior to the award ceremony, scholarship students were treated to a two-day trip on November 2 and 3 to take in the sites and traditional crafts of the ancient capital of Kyoto, with visits to companies, boat rides down the Hozugawa River, sightseeing in Arashiyama, and hands-on experience of yuzen kimono dyeing. On the morning of November 4, the scholarship students visited the Sagawa Art Museum (Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture) to view the works of Nihonga artist Ikuo Hirayama, sculptor Churyo Sato, and ceramicist Kichizaemon Raku. At the "Raku Kichizaemon Kan" annex of the museum, students sampled matcha (powdered green tea) and Japanese sweets served at a ryurei-style (guests seated on chairs) tea ceremony.
The Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation is an affiliated organization of SG Holdings Group. It was funded and established in 1986 by Sagawa Express Group (current SG Holdings Group) under the authorization of the Education Ministry (current Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). The Foundation was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the foundation of Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. with the aim of contributing back to society by providing scholarships to privately financed students from Southeast Asia, who are expected to become key players in the next generation. As of the end of the present fiscal year (2008), the Foundation will have provided a total of 804.3 million yen in scholarships to 362 students.
In addition to providing scholarships, the Foundation issues Sagawa Scholarship student directories and collections of alumni essays, and holds award ceremonies and networking events to help scholarship students keep in touch with each other and with the Foundation, during and after the scholarship period.
