[Sagawa Express] "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" Service, Offered by Senshukai and Sagawa Express on Belle Maison Net, Is Off to Successful Start with Over 11,000 Parcels Handled in First Month(10/14/2008)
"Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit," a parcel delivery service developed by Sagawa Express Co., Ltd., was launched on September 1, 2008 jointly by Senshukai Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kita Ward, Osaka City) and Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. for deliveries of purchases on Senshukai's online shopping site Belle Maison Net (in Japanese) (http://www.bellemaison.jp). In its first month (September 1 through 30), 11,773 parcels (equivalent to some 11 tons in CO2 emissions credits) were delivered using this service, where the shopper opts to contribute toward the cost of purchasing CO2 emissions credits.
The scheme is outlined on Senshukai's "Stop Global Warming Campaign" website (see below for URL), which gives customers an easy-to-understand explanation of global warming, as well as updates on the campaign's progress.

By having the online shopper, the direct marketer (Senshukai) and the parcel delivery company (Sagawa Express) share the cost of purchasing CO2 emissions credits, the "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" delivery service, which is available until December 31, 2008, aims to help Japan achieve its greenhouse gas reduction target of 6%. Impressed anew by the high degree of customer environmental awareness shown by the scheme's popularity, Senshukai and Sagawa Express wish to continue efforts toward preserving the environment.

How "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" works
 ·  A customer who makes a purchase on Belle Maison Net selects "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" for their delivery option. The option is available on personal computer web browsers only, and cannot be selected for purchases made on mobile phone sites. There are also products for which the option cannot be selected.
 ·  A customer who has selected "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" pays an extra 1 yen for the option, worth 346 grams(*1) of CO2, the amount emitted in delivering one parcel. Senshukai and Sagawa Express also contribute 1 yen each for a total of 3 yen, equivalent to emissions credits for 1,038 grams of CO2, which Sagawa Express then transfers free of charge to the Japanese government. The transferred CO2 emissions credits count toward the 6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that Japan is obliged to realize under the Kyoto Protocol.

*2 :  10,000 tons worth of CO2 emissions credits for the "Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit" were purchased by Sagawa Express through Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation from a wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India under a UN-approved greenhouse gas reduction scheme.
