[Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation] Contributing to development of human resources who will serve as a bridge between the Southeast Asia and Japan 2007 Scholarship Recipients selected by Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation (11/24/2007) |
 |
| The Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation held a 2007 (22nd) Scholarship Recipient Certificate Award Ceremony at the Westin Miyako Kyoto (Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto) on November 24. The Foundation's president, Eiichi Kuriwada, awarded scholarship recipient certificates to 16 overseas students. |
 |
| A total of 83 students from Southeast Asia, recommended by presidents of their host universities in Japan, applied for the Foundation's 22nd scholarship in 2007. The Foundation's selection committee had great difficulty in choosing recipients, because all the applicants were highly motivated to study at a university in Japan in order to serve as a bridge linking their own country and Japan, for human interaction as well as for mutual development in areas such as politics, economy and culture. |
 |
| On behalf of all 16 recipients who attended the ceremony, a Vietnamese student expressed his goal as follows: "Southeast Asia now faces many issues in such areas as economy, environment and energy. Mutual collaboration is essential in resolving such issues for further development of the region. Japan has a major role to play in various areas; I hope that I can serve as a bridge helping to establish collaborative relationships between my country and Japan. I am truly grateful to have been granted this scholarship, because this means my dream has been recognized. I will do my best to reciprocate the generosity of the Foundation." At a get-together following the ceremony, scholarship recipients interacted with each other, and with those from the Foundation and SG Holdings Group, to develop friendship and mutual trust. |

Earlier, on November 23, the Foundation and Rotary Club Kyoto-East jointly held the 4th World Youth Exchange Meeting under the same theme as the 3rd meeting last year -- Understanding Japanese Culture and Spirit.
This year's event was held at SG Holdings Group's resort facility in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture. Participants learned about traditional techniques of Court Doll Maker Hisashige Ito XII through his lecture, titled Dolls Reflect the Heart. Participants also learned to make a round maki-e lacquer tray, under the instruction of the Kyoto Lacquerware Cooperative Association. Subsequently, participants moved to the Sagawa Art Museum to appreciate the works of nihonga painter Ikuo Hirayama, sculptor Churyo Sato and potter Kichizaemon Raku XV, also enjoying Japanese sweets and powdered green tea served in a tearoom with tables and chairs. |

The Sagawa Foreign Students' Scholarship Foundation, SG Holdings Group's affiliated organization, was established in 1986 under the authorization of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (current Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Group's founding. With the aim of returning benefits thus far derived from society, the Group decided to finance scholarships for privately financed students from the Southeast Asia who can become future leaders in their own countries. From the Foundation's establishment in 1986 to the end of fiscal year 2007, a total of 765.9 million yen will have been provided for 345 students.
In addition to providing scholarships, the Foundation communicates with students by holding a scholarship award ceremony and an exchange meeting, also supporting the students after graduation by publishing a Sagawa scholarship student and alumni directory and a collection of graduates' essays. |
